England's Assistant Coach Shares His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and that's our focus long hours toward. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger for development knows no bounds. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

He completed the course as the best in his year, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge took over, and, four months later, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
