Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
