A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
