Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down Following Move Into Fried Chicken.

A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit peak pizza while broadening the company into fried chicken has been removed after disagreements with its board.

Leadership Change

The former CEO is leaving after just two years in leadership, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for more than two decades, had attempted to redirect the UK's largest pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He observed poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the international market.

Governance Friction

It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the directors over his focus and management style, although Domino's release said he was departing “through mutual consent”.

Recent Brand Launch

In September, the chain introduced its poultry brand – which the former chief referred to as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.

While the business is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as planned, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.

Board Comment

Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to boost expansion and value creation in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on selecting the suitable leader to direct the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Industry Challenges

Recently, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said transactions declined by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Rival chains are also facing challenges. Another major chain revealed the closing of dozens of outlets a recently, after the company behind its British operations fell into administration.

Wellness Efforts

Adapting to customer preferences towards healthier eating, the company has launched reduced-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A family cheese pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has 909 kcal.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the gambling company William Hill. It is believed that she prefers not to occupy the CEO position long-term.

Frampton stated: “We have a number of ongoing development and operational projects that we will be concentrating on carrying out at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised ongoing development on the organization's procurement system and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also in need of a full-time chief financial officer until 16 March, when Andrea joins from the drinks company C&C Group. In the meantime, Richard Snow serves as interim finance chief.
