A major tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
