Walsh Shines as Ruthless Australia Sweep England Away in First Ashes Test
The home side's offensive weaknesses were exposed and punished by a clinical Australia as the tourists secured a worryingly straightforward win in the opening Test of the Ashes.
Shaun Wane’s side had spoken effusively about their motivation going into the opening series for over two decades, and they were definitely full of effort at the famous stadium. Yet, in the crucial moments, it was the reigning title holders who showed more calmness in front of a record attendance for an Ashes Test in the United Kingdom of more than 60,000.
Brilliant Performance from Walsh
Led by an outstanding showing in offense and defense from club star Walsh, Australia were worthy and comfortable winners in the opening Test of the three-match series, meaning England must triumph at Goodison Park next Saturday to keep alive their hopes of a first Ashes win since 1970.
They will have to be significantly improved with the possession if they are to achieve that. On several instances in the opening period, the hosts found themselves in promising positions but they were unable to cross for any tries. That was in no small part thanks to Reece Walsh, who executed two wonderful turnovers.
Key Moments of the Game
The first came as Farnworth seemed certain to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then Walsh stopped Lewis as half-time approached. By then, the Australians had taken the lead as Walsh himself finished a wonderful move.
Cleary converted before adding a two-pointer on the brink of the interval to establish a two-score lead. It was a significant point, as was the score for Crichton shortly after the resumption which made it 14-0 in favor of the visitors. The hosts now had to cross the line thrice and that seemed to stifle their momentum.
Should there have been uncertainty about the victors, they were decisively settled with 15 minutes to go. Cameron Munster’s half-break was supported by Crichton, who pushed past Welsby for Australia’s third try.
That made it 20-0 and there was added disappointment in the closing stages as Reece Walsh completed another breathtaking move, exploiting a tired and visibly shot England defensive line for his second try.
Match Result and Looking Ahead
By then, home fans had begun to leave early and many missed Daryl Clark’s consolation, which at least prevented England being held to nil. Nonetheless, there are many issues for Wane to answer going into what is now a must-win Test next Saturday.
